Mustangs of the West begin the decade with new single, “How Blue”
Mustangs of the West start the decade with “How Blue“, an original track that marks the launch of a countdown to their new album, TIME
“How Blue”, the first single from Mustangs of the West’s upcoming album TIME, is a memorable song with a great hook. Written by lead singer/acoustic guitarist Suzanna Spring and lead guitarist Sherry Rayn Barnett, along with The Mustangs original drummer, Kathi Taylor, the song has a Byrds-ish retro feel and jangly 12-string guitar intro.
“How Blue” was produced by esteemed Canadian record producer/engineer Mark Howard (Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, REM), who suggested the band try a new approach to the song. Spring and Barnett re-wrote it on the spot in the control room at Henson Recording Studios (formerly the historic A&M Records studios), where Mustangs of the West recorded the album. The band tracked the song sitting in a circle next to the mixing board. Drummer Suzanne Morissette played a stripped-down drum kit, and with bassist Holly Montgomery laid down a great groove for the song. Violinist Aubrey Richmond added beautiful fiddle and mandolin parts, and Barnett played Wendy Melvoin’s 60’s vintage Fender Mustang guitar for the solo. “How Blue” features Mustangs of the West’s signature harmonies, and a chorus that will stay in your head long after the song is over.
